Ohio History Day will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Union at Ohio State University.
Registration Information
Students who qualify at District History Day events will recieve a registration packet for
Ohio History Day.
Schedule
2012 Ohio History Day is tentatively scheduled for April 28 at Ohio State University. Check back, we will post information as it becomes finalized.
7:30am-11:30: Set Up and Registration
Exhibits should set up and register before 9:00 as the exhibit hall will be closed for judging at that time.
9:00am-12:00pm: Judging of all Entries
12:30pm-1:30pm: Public Viewing of Exhibits-
12:45pm: Run Off Announcements
1:30pm-3:00: Run-Offs
ONLY PERFORMANCE AND DOCUMENTARY RUN OFFS WILL BE ANNOUNCED.
Performance and Documentary students need to be present for run-offs.
3:00-3:30pm: Public Viewing of Exhibits/Exhibit Take Down
4:00pm: Awards Ceremony
There will be a brief meeting following the Awards Ceremony for students moving on to National History Day

Parking
Two parking garages are located next door to the Ohio Union. You may enter off High St. or College Rd. The cost is $5 for the day and MUST be paid with CASH.
Bus parking: Buses should drop students off then head to the Ohio Historical Society to park until the contest is over. (800 E. 17th Ave. Columbus, OH 43211) There will be no charge for the buses.

The Ohio Union offers many choices for food on the first floor. The Union Market contains a coffee bar and you can enjoy lunch at two full service restaurants: Woody’s and Sloopy’s Diner. We are working on arranging tours of OSU during History Day. Check back for more information.

Note: The documentary and performance categories may include run-off judging. Students in these categories need to be prepared to present their projects starting at 1:00pm.

Tours are available on Saturdays on the hour from noon- 3pm. Tours are 45 minutes long. Self-guided tours may be done from 11am-5pm.

The Ohio History Center offers visitors a rewarding museum experience of Ohio’s past and an Archives/Library that provides rich resources for genealogists and other researchers.
The museum is open on Saturday from 10am-5pm.

Special Prizes
Ohio History Day offers a variety of special prizes. Special awards will be awarded in a few special categories, such as use of archival material in research. Special Awards judges will circulate throughout the preliminary and final rounds of judging. Exhibit students do not need to be present at their entry to be considered for a topical prize.

Special Awards offered at the 2011 contest were:
The Society of Ohio Archivists Award
Project must demonstrate exceptional research and use of primary sources to include at least two of the following: letters, speeches, diaries, newspaper articles from the time, oral history interviews, documents, photographs, artifacts, or anything else that provides a first hand account about a person or event.
History Day Project winners must have used primary resources on site at a research institution housing those materials.
All primary sources must be cited accurately in the bibliography of the paper.
This award was initiated in 1999. Award recipients are given a certificate and a $100.00 cash award for a winner--individual or group--in both the Junior and Senior Divisions.
Local History Award
Sponsored by the Ohio Local History Alliance for an outstanding entry based on a local history topic in the junior and senior division for $100.
Case Western Reserve University Half Scholarship
Juniors and Seniors can apply for the scholarship by writing a one-page essay stating your interest in and qualification for the award, one letter of support from a teacher or supervisor who is familiar with your academic work, and an official copy of your transcripts sent by your school to the address below. Students must participate in History Day and meet the Case Western Reserve University admission requirements.

The Welsh in Ohio Award- A $100 prize award to a project that demonstrates outstanding historical achievement in the areas of Welsh Heritage and traditions in the State of Ohio.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Award- A $200 prize will be awarded to an excellent entry focused on the history of music.
Fan the Flame Award- A $200 award will be given by the National Undergroun Railroad Freedom Center to an outstanding project focusing on an individual, a group or a movement that have contributed significantly to the advancement of freedoms and the assurance of the civil and human rights of others.
The African American History Award- A $100 prize award to an outstanding project related to African American history sponsored by The Ohio State's Department of History.
The Ohio Council for Social Studies Award- A $100 prize award to an outstanding project related to Ohio history.
The Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board- Two $250 prize awards to recognize the best use of Ohio's historical records in a History Day project.
Patricia Behring Teacher of Merit - Two teachers, one at the junior level and one at the senior level, will be awarded the Teacher of Merit award. They will each recieve a $500 award and be entered in the national contest for a $10,000 prize.
Judging Information
Judging Evaluations
All judging evaluations will be collected, sorted by school, and returned to participating teachers during the following school week.
Notes About History Day Judging: Evaluating history is a subjective process, but criteria and methods have been established to achieve fair decisions. Here is a description of how the judging process will work at the State History Day:
Use of Evaluation Forms: Each judge will have an evaluation form for the entries they are judging. They are instructed to use these sheets to write positive, critical evaluations of each entry. Written comments are stressed in judging orientation because this is the principal feedback students receive from the event.
Oral interaction: Each judge, at their discretion, has the opportunity to question students about any aspect of their entry. This is most often a way to find out about the processes the entry went through to reach its current state, or to offer the student an opportunity to explain issues of their interpretation. The interview portion of judging does not weigh heavily in final decision making. All History Day entries are expected to stand on their own and be understood without the need for a student to explain or clarify their issues. During final judging, there will be no question-and-answer session.
Ratings: All History Day judging decisions are made by the consensus of the judging teams. Judges are asked to place students in the following scale: Superior - Excellent - Good. In effect, History Day judging is a jury process where the judges have to reach a shared conclusion, rather than an arbitrary point system.
Please Note: Ratings vary from one judging group to another. Each set of judges establishes their own standards for ratings. Ratings cannot be compared across different judging teams.
Final Judging: Categories with a single team of judges will have award decisions made by those teams. Categories with multiple teams of judges will have run-offs that will consider the top three entries from the initial judging groups. A new set of judges, or combination from the original teams, will evaluate the final entries and determine state award winners.
Judging Run-Offs
Be advised that there WILL BE judging run-offs in documentary and performance categories. Run-off judging times will be posted by noon. Please be prepared to be available for judging in the final round beginning at 1:00.
Exhibit, Historical Paper, and Web Site finalists will be announced as honorable mentions during the awards ceremony. Information about the second round judging for Exhibits, Web Sites, and Historicals Paper will not be available before the awards ceremony at 4:00 PM.
Final Exhibit Judging:
Only judges and program officials will be allowed into the exhibit areas during final exhibit judging. Teams of final judges will evaluate the exhibits selected as finalists by the first round judging teams. The exhibit room will open to the public at approximately 1:30.
Students presence is not required or admitted for final exhibit, web site, and paper judging. They should be sure that 2 copies of their research description and bibliography are left with the exhibit after the completion of the first round of judging.
